Geothermal power plant Velika 1

Project title: Geothermal power plant „Velika 1“, 10 MWel
Investor: Geoen d.o.o.
Location: Ciglena, Croatia
Construction completion: 2019

Project description

Reasons for investing:

  • Simultaneous production of electricity and heat from renewable energy sources;
  • Using Croatia’s great geothermal potential;
  • Diversification of electricity sources and increasing Croatia’s energy independence;
  • Increasing the share of renewable energy sources in electricity production;

Geothermal power plant "Velika 1" is the first geothermal power plant in Croatia, also the largest in continental Europe, which is a big step forward in exploiting Croatia’s significant geothermal potential. Geothermal power plant "Velika 1" takes geothermal water through two production wells from a depth of about 2800 m. Geothermal water with a temperature of about 166⁰C heats the refrigerant (isobutane) in the ORC system for electricity production via a heat exchanger. After transferring the thermal energy to the isobutane, the geothermal water is returned to the underground geothermal pool by injection pumps through two injection wells. Electricity from geothermal sources represents a huge and valuable potential in energy management due to its environmental sustainability and reliability of production being independent of numerous external influences.

Results of equipment dimensioning:

  • Cogeneration ORC plant with a total gross electric power of 17,5 MWel
  • Electric power system designed to deliver up to 10 MWel of power to the electricity distribution network.
  • Emergency air cooler system with a total cooling capacity of ~ 70 MWth

Enerkon participated in the project through following activities:

  • Cost-benefit analysis
  • Preliminary design of ORC (electric power plant) and BOP (borehole) parts of the plant
  • Main design of ORC (electric power plant) and BOP (borehole) parts of the plant
  • Detailed design of ORC (electric power plant) and BOP (borehole) parts of the plant
