In collaboration with Enerkon d.o.o., GEIA is conducting a feasibility study to convert a traditional bioenergy facility into one producing next-generation biopellets. Supported by Norway Grants 2014-2021, in the frame of the Business Development and Innovation Croatia Programme, this project highlights our commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Project description:

Solar energy represents one of the key and generally accepted renewable energy sources. Therefore, the construction of solar power plants (photovoltaic power plants) that convert sun energy into electricity represents important aspects of the energy sector development strategy of the Republic of Croatia. The main elements of a solar power plant are solar panels, inverters, a transformer, and a control and monitoring system. During the work life of the solar power plant, solar panels convert the radiated solar energy into DC electricity. The solar panels are connected in series (strings) to obtain the appropriate direct current voltage at the input to the inverter. An inverter converts direct current into alternating current of a specific voltage. The alternating current voltage is increased using a transformer to a higher voltage suitable for the transmission of electricity over longer distances and for connection to the power grid of the Republic of Croatia.

Enerkon participated in the project through the following activities:

• creation of a Conceptual design;
• consulting and technical advice during the preparation of studies (EZOP, EOTRP...);
• creation of a Basic design;
• preparation of the Main design;
• consulting and expert assistance to the investor when obtaining key documents and permits in the field of spatial planning and construction (Energy Approval, Location Permit, Building Permit...).

Short description of the project (operation)

The project "Modular high-capacity medical waste sterilization plant" establishes a new business organization of the innovation consortium as well as changes the business processes of the Applicant and his two partners.

Through the commercialization of an innovative medical waste treatment plant of a different capacity, preconditions will be created for the establishment of long-term supplier relations with the Intergrator company in order to significantly improve the service of disposing hazardous substances. The medical waste treatment plant will, through innovative technology, enable reliable sterilization, reduce volume, simplify transport, reduce the cost of treatment and enable recovery by converting it into energy.

Objectives and expected results of the project (operation)

The overall goal of the project is to achieve cooperation between three SMEs in order to create an innovative product and establish long-term supplier relationship with the integrator and their inclusion in the value chain.

The specific goals that will be achieved by the implementation of the project are:

• Creation of new job positions - a minimum of 11 new full-time employees by 2025,
• Commercialization of a new product for the market,
• Implementation of new methods in the production and logistics process for three SMEs
• Implementation of innovation in the business organization for the members of the innovation consortium;
• establishing long-term supplier relations with the integrator and including three SMEs in the value chain;
• Use of private capital in addition to EU public funding in the amount of more than HRK 8.451.000,00;
• Increased sales revenue by more than HRK 14 million that will result from the commercialization of a new product in the year m + 3 for all members of the consortium.

The total value of the Project is HRK 16,080,338.16. Grants awarded are in the amount of HRK 7,591,808.31.

European Hydrogen Week is the biggest annual event dedicated to hydrogen under the leadership of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and its members, the European Commission, Hydrogen Europe, and Hydrogen Europe Research.

By participating in this year's expo in Brussels, Enerkon learned everything about emerging hydrogen-based solutions, trends, and approaches in the global energy sector.

Project title: Increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources in the companies DOK-ING d.o.o.

Project description:

As part of the project in the company DOK-ING d.o.o. the heating and cooling system of the production facility was reconstructed, and a photovoltaic power plant and an elevator were installed. The project was co-financed based on a public call by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development related to increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources in manufacturing industries. All project activities were completed successfully, and all necessary certification and technical documentation was created, harmonized, and submitted. A technical inspection was carried out to obtain a use permit, in which a positive opinion of representatives of public law bodies and independent experts was obtained.

Enerkon is in this project with the company DOK-ING d.o.o. participated from the idea (end of 2020) to realization (half of 2023), which means that we did:

• all phases of design (development of the idea, creation of the conceptual solution and the main project and obtaining the necessary permits);
• active participation in the preparation of the project proposal as technical support to consultants for the preparation of projects; professional supervision during the execution of works;
• coordination in the phase of preparation of the necessary technical documentation after execution to obtain a permit for the permanent operation of the photovoltaic power plant and a use permit;
• consulting during the implementation of the entire project and active participation in the implementation of all project activities;

What does the implementation of this project mean for DOK-ING d.o.o.?

• increasing energy efficiency (through the rational use of energy through reduction of losses and application of newer and more efficient technologies and equipment);
• increasing independence in energy supply (production of electricity from renewable sources (photovoltaic power plant) to meet all needs, both for heating and cooling the space and for the production process itself);
• realization of significant financial benefits (reduction of energy costs); revitalization and modernization of the heating system and introduction of the cooling system in the entire production plant;
• creation of better working conditions for employees (installation of a cooling system) and the possibility of employment of persons reducing mobility (installation of elevators);

Project title: Adaptation of a power plant that produces expandable polystyrene
Investor: EPSIK d.o.o. Zagreb

Construction completion: 2006

Project description

The PS II plant was revitalized in order to increase the production capacity of expanded polystyrene to 16 000 t per year. The former EPSIK production unit consisted of two plants, Polystyrene I (PS I) and Polystyrene II (PS II). Polystyrene grain (PS) was produced in PS I as the first stage of expanding polystyrene (EPS) production. Most of the PS produced was sent for further processing to PS II for the second stage of EPS production. A small part was processed in the final processing stage of PS I into a finished product of general purpose polystyrene (GPS) and rubber modified polystyrene (HIPS). This plant was closed in 1998. The reopening of production is not planned.
In PS II, EPS was produced in the second stage of production. With the closure of PS I, the entire production of EPS (first and second stage) was transferred to PS II with the use of some auxiliary sections in PS I. Production was closed in 2003 due to inefficiency. The owner decided to initiate activities for the revitalization of the existing PS II plant, which will be adapted to a one-stage production of EPS by purchasing a license and replacing parts of the existing equipment. This adapted plant retains its appearance, capacity and technological flow of the existing PS II and auxiliary sections in PS I. The new EPS product basically retains or improves the properties of the product manufactured until 2003, with higher utilization, lower energy consumption and reduced emissions into the atmosphere.

Project description

Reasons for investing:

• Investor is producing electricity in diesel generators because of limited grid capacity
• There is an increased need for electricity due to increased parquet production
• There is sufficient wood residue for a cogeneration plant
• A new grid is being built by HEP in the meantime

• Steam boiler fired by biomass 20 t/h, 40 bar, 400°C
• Condensing steam turbine with regulated steam extraction and a heat station 2x3 MW with parameters 90/70°C for wood drying kilns
